About This

Not too long ago, my aunt sent a box of family memorabilia north from Texas with one of my sisters. In this box was a travel diary, kept by my great-great-aunt Mildred, of a trip she took almost a hundred years ago, in 1924. I thought it would be fun to put her notes into a modern form and share it with others.

I did add some commas and paragraph breaks to make it easier to read on screens. I’ve included photos of the original pages, and you can see that Aunt Mildred didn’t use those breaks as much as one could. Was that the style of the times, or just her personal journaling style?

Once in a while I was unable to read a word, so that’s noted as [illegible]. I used italics where she used underlining, and also italicized ship names and non-English words.

Because this is online, I added translations if I knew them, and occasionally other links after the entries—things that struck my fancy or that I had to look up to understand.

I hope you enjoy it.
